Kill Bill 4K UHD:t on sitten upscaleja 2K digital intermediateista. Tässä syy: "Movies have been shot on film but completed on a digital format for about 20 years now. They weren't scanned into digital format as 2K for the Blu-ray, they were scanned into digital format as the actual finish for the movie at the time it was made. These things are called Digital Intermediates. These DIs form the final digital source master for the film, and the camera negative as shot is stored away somewhere. Sometimes this camera negative is cut into a conformed negative ie the final edit of the movie even though it's been finished digitally, but sometimes this negative is not cut together for a DI because it doesn't need to be, so to access it again for a 4K transfer means locating lots of different bits of film and scanning them all in separately and editing them back together digitally to match the final product. That costs time, and money, and so for most movies finished to these Digital Intermediates - as done for the Kill Bills and indeed every Tarantino movie since then, apart from H8 - the digital source masters are what the 4K masters are created from. As the DSMs are finished to cinema standard specs, not home video bluray specs, then they contain colour and range that the UHD format can exploit via HDR, even on a 2K upscaled show as colour and range are not resolution dependent. In other words: upscales are not the devil. They're not the absolute best that x movie could be, true, but can and often do present benefits that a 1080p SDR Blu-ray cannot show. If Kill Bill has been upscaled and not rebuilt from the camera negative I'm still expecting it to beat a 17-year-old Blu-ray transfer." Onko pohjoismaisessa Panic Room UHD:ssa mukana myös bluray? CDONin tiedoissa on vain 4K-levy, kun taas jossain muualla lukee 4K + Bluray. En tiedä mikä tieto on luotettava.
Miten suomentaisit digital intermediate, niin että se olisi tässä asiayhteydessä mahdollisimman järkevä suomennos? Google translaten digitaalinen välivaihe, keskivaihe, keskitaso tai välikäsi tuskin on hyvä suomennos. "Digital intermediate (DI) is a motion picture finishing process which classically involves digitizing a motion picture and manipulating the color and other image characteristics." Digitaalinen elokuvan viimeistelyprosessi.......Voisiko sana "viimeistely" olla kuvaava suomennos termille Intermediate? Toisaalta eikös viimeistely viittaa masterointiin....
En tiedä onko tuolle suoraa suomenkielistä termiä. Intermediate on siis ensimmäinen digitaalinen versio filmillä olleesta leffasta eli "alkuperäinen" digitaalinen kopio. Filmin negatiivit ovat se alkuperäinen kopio, josta skannaamalla tehdään tuo intermediate. Jonkun videon joskus katselin, jossa erään boutique labelin asiantuntija selitti tuota prosessia. Intermediate on kokoluokassa teratavuja eli kun siitä tehdään 100/50/25GB blu ray levylle mahtuva kopio, niin videota pakataan todella paljon.
